5 Simple Tricks to Replace U-Shaped Fluorescent Bulbs with LEDs
Tired of that tired, flickering U-shaped fluorescent bulb? Want to brighten your space with energy-saving LEDs? Upgrading is easier than you think! Here are 5 simple tricks to guide you:
1. Know Your Sizes: Not all U-shaped bulbs are created equal. Measure yours carefully (length and diameter) to find the perfect LED replacement.
2. Bypass or Direct Wire? This depends on your fixture. If your ballast is removable, opt for a “ballast bypass” LED and remove the ballast for direct wiring. If not, choose a “direct wire” LED designed to work with the existing ballast.
3. Safety First: Turn off the power at the breaker box before starting. Wear safety glasses and use pliers carefully, if needed.
4. Remove the Old Bulbs: Locate the release tabs or clips and gently twist/press to remove the old bulbs. Dispose of them responsibly (they contain mercury!).
5. Install the New LEDs: Align the pins with the sockets and gently push them in until secure. Turn on the power and enjoy the bright, energy-efficient glow!
Bonus Tip: Dimmable LEDs offer added control. Unsure about compatibility? Consult a qualified electrician.
